Paper Boxes Types and Trend

Have a favourite food delivery box? Remember its colour, texture, quality, and size? Did you say yes? Well, it isn’t a coincidence. Brands incorporate science, research, and thought to make their products and packaging impactful. The packaging of any product, in fact, plays a crucial role in making the brand stand out. According to a report, by 2023, the global market size of paper box packaging could reach around $114 billion. Let’s delve into the nuances of packaging and its trends.

What is a corrugated box?

A corrugated box is made using corrugated cardboard. It is made of three layers of kraft paper. The inner layer of corrugated cardboard is made in waves/flutes. It is put between two kraft paper layers, differentiating it from simple cardboard.

These cardboards are further converted into thin sheets to fold, trim, and gouge. After that, these can be used in different sizes and shapes. Glue is applied to the corners and folds to make the boxes more sturdy. And there you have it: a corrugated box. Recycled paper is used to make these boxes. Some examples of corrugated packaging include pizza boxes, boxes for small retail items, and general consumer goods.

What is a rigid box?

Do you remember unboxing your iPhone or iPad? Companies such as Apple and Rolex use rigid boxes to package and ship their products with utmost safety. A rigid box is made using a highly compressed form of paperboard. It is four times thinner than standard paper packaging and has great durability. According to a report, the global market size of luxury rigid boxes could increase to $5.4 billion by 2030. A rigid box does not need heavy manufacturing machinery or expensive raw materials. However, the cost of rigid boxes is higher than corrugated boxes because of their better quality.

What are mono cartons?

A mono carton, as the name suggests, is made of a single sheet of paperboard to give it any shape or size. Companies that deal in compact packaging prefer mono cartons. These are used in the pharmaceutical, electronics, cosmetics, automotive, food, and beverage industries. These boxes are in trend currently as they are cost-effective. However, these boxes are not recommended for heavy products as they are made from one piece of the paper sheet; There are five types of mono cartons:

  • Printed mono cartons
  • Braille mono cartons
  • Folding mono cartons
  • Litho-laminated mono cartons
  • Clamshell and trey mono cartons
