Corrugation flutes - types , importance and uses

Flutes are also called as corrugation, used to strengthen or reinforce the cardboard. They typically look like wavy lines which are glued to paperboard(liner), forms corrugated board. Fluting in packaging gives your packaging rigidity and helps withstand any crushing.

The flutes used in these boxes play an important role, various types of the flute are used in corrugated boxes among which the most normally used is Flute C which is used in more than 80% of the corrugated boxes.

Flute is categorized by thickness of paper being folded (fluting paper). This can range from single walled flutes, which are smaller flutes tend to provide better printability and foldability. Larger flutes are typically doubled walled or above, provide greater strength and cushioning, making them ideal for shipping.

Flute profiles can be mixed and matched within a single piece of combined board. For example : CE double wall is durable because of its C-flute layer, while its E-flute layer provides a smooth printing surface. A sheet of material can be made of different thickness of board to manipulate printability, compression and cushioning strengths.

Types of Flutes:

  • A Flute (36 flutes every square foot with a thickness of ¼.) – Its original flute has highest flute size, and therefore, when combined with an inner and outer facing, is the thickest. Excellent compression and cushioning as well as good stacking strength. Great for packaging items and commonly used for structural strength, it is chiefly used to pack fragile products.

  • B Flute (47 flutes each foot with a thickness having 1/8.)- Excellent crush, puncture resistance and great printing surface. This type of flute is mainly used in inner packing and displays. For food packaging, retail packaging, Lith laminating, POP (point of purchase) displays, die cut inserts, and custom printed packaging.
  • C Flute (39 flutes each foot with a thickness having 3/16)- Most commonly used in the industry, has good printing surface, compression properties and offers crush resistance. It’s used in making shipping boxes, box for food items and for protecting fragile items such as glass, furniture, etc.
  • E Flute (90 flutes every foot with a thickness of 1/16.)- Its second most commonly used, eco-friendly with excellent crush resistance, exceptional printing surface and its thin construction helps to reduce storage space. Used for displays, pizza boxes, ballot boxes, and packaging of consumer goods such as glass, ceramics, and cosmetics.
  • F Flute (124 flutes per foot having a thickness of 1/32.)- Smaller/Tighter, eco-friendly, outstanding printing surface, excellent crush resistance and its thin construction allows for stiffer boxes with less fiber. used in fast food clam shell containers and packaging for consumer goods such as cosmetics, jewelry, and shoes.
